Project details

Challenge

NSPCC Learning have already obtained the basic level accessibility requirement by implementing a screen reader tool with their website.

But having run a recent audit, they would now like to improve their accessibility stance further.

By resolving a number of accessibility issues raised by the report, to make content on the site more accessible to a larger audience. Particularly those who use the popular screen reader tools such as NDVA.

Solution

Having reviewed the accessibility audit report, Igentics implemented a number of enhancements to the source HTML of the website to:

  • Ease navigation of the website via a keyboard
  • Help screen readers to identify sections of the website for improved navigation
  • Obfuscated redundant information within the source of the page to prevent accessible tools from announcing/indexing unhelpful information
  • Update the colour of backgrounds & fonts to improve legibility of copy for visibly impaired users

Result

The improvements to the naked eye are very minor. But the goal of these enhancements is to make the content more accessible to a wider audience.

Having carried out these improvements. The website is now more accessibility compliant. SEO rankings have been improved with header markup improvements.

Both Igentics and NSPCC have a improved understanding of how users with disabilities are impacted. And thus will continue to keep accessibility in mind when discussing user flows for future improvements.
