With a budget of roughly £509 million and a responsibility for the NHS healthcare of over 315,000 people in Ealing, the Primary Care Trust's main focus is to look at the needs of the individual as a patient and the community as a whole and to shape all of the NHS services within the borough.
Like many organisations, Ealing PCT had an intranet which was a combination of a number of disparate systems which had evolved over several years. As a consequence, the system was proving unsuitable and unable to support the requirements of the trust and the needs of its 1,100 permanent, contract and part time staff. As part of a wider IT project the Trust had adopted Microsoft SharePoint (MOSS 2007) as a platform and a decision was taken to utilise this for a rebuild of the intranet.
Using Igentics' proven experience of SharePoint, a full redesign and rebuild was undertaken. This was a complex exercise with significant and long lasting implications: the structure of the intranet had to be defined and complex user permissions had to be set-up in order to contain and disseminate a wide range of differing information from telephone lists to patient records and clinical/non clinical governance data.
Within a couple of months of the project initiation and subsequent re-launch of the intranet, the internal teams at the PCT were able to begin transferring the legacy content to the intranet and take on the ongoing management of the different user groups, with the overall solution providing a simple, straightforward and secure system for the sharing of information between the different departments within the PCT.

The daunting task of migrating legacy information was made easier by creating simple page layouts to ensure all the relevant data was transferred.
